Carl Fraser, kunstner og arkitekt fra London (UK) beskæftiger sig med projekter der handler om at kortlægge sociale, kulturelle og økonomiske strukturer i gentrificerede byområder. På denne baggrund inviterede Sigrids Stue Carl til Gellerup i 2019 for et kort research ophold. Dette blev begyndelsen på et aktivt og langvarigt samarbejde mellem Carl og Sigrids Stues team. Sammen arbejder vi på lokale og internationale projekter vedr. identitet, indflydelse og magtstrukturer i byudvikling og offentlige rum.
“Mapping Gellerup” hedder Carls første samarbejdsprojekt i Gellerup: en rumlig, tekstlig og visuel installation, hvori der indgår aktuelle og historiske begivenheder samt tiltag fra den sociale, kulturelle og politiske arena – lokalt i Gellerupparken og globalt. En række lokale organisationer og enkeltpersoner har givet input til projektet i form af dialoger og interviews.
Efter en første udarbejdelse af en todimensionelt printede kort, blev Mapping Gellerup transformeret i en i en rumlig interaktiv installation, som blev præsenteret i Gellerup i løbet af 2022, i af den nye Sports- og Kulturcampus “Mellemrummet” samt i BLIXENS hos Miljø og Teknik afdeling (Aarhus Kommune).
Installationen Mapping Gellerup kan opleves som et fysisk rum, der tydeliggør de sociale og politiske forandringer og det daglige liv i Gellerup.
Ved at fysisk/bogstaveligt indgå i Carls installationen, har man mulighed for at se, læse og opleve “det øjeblikkelige tabte, som vi især møder i et sted som Gellerup, hvor alting forandrer sig så hurtigt” (Carl, 2022). I linjen med Sigrids Stues arbejdet i området, har denne samarbejdsproces erindringer som fokus og samlingen af fortællinger, relationer og identiteter, som risikerer at blive slettet og erstattet i den gentagende byudvikling og gennem de forskellige helhedsplaner.
“Jeg håber, at jeg med denne tidslinje, kan hjælpe med at adressere spørgsmålet om, hvem udviklingen er til for, og hvad der nogle gange går tabt i processen,” siger Carl Fraser.
Projektet realiseres i samarbejde med Sigrids Stue og andre lokale samarbejdspartnere: Brabrand-Årslev lokalhistoriske samling, Gellerup bibliotek, Gellerup Art Factory og en lang række af imødekommende lokale beboere. Mapping Gellerup var støttet økonomisk gennem Sigrids Stues midler fra Statens Kunstfond, Den Jyske Kunstfond og Aarhus Kommune.
Mapping Gellerup er udgangspunktet for Carl Frasers tekstproduktion Claiming Space, som udkommer under Neighbourhood Remarks publikationsserie.

Carl Fraser, an artist and architect from London (UK), works on projects that map social, cultural and economic structures in gentrified urban areas. Due to this experience and background, Sigrids Stue invited Carl to Gellerup in 2019 for a short research stay. This was the beginning of an active and long-lasting collaboration between Carl and Sigrids Stue’s team. Together we work on local and international projects on identity, influence and power structures in urban development and public spaces.
‘Mapping Gellerup’ is Carl’s first collaborative project in Gellerup: a spatial, textual and visual installation that incorporates current and historical events and initiatives from the social, cultural and political arena – locally in the Gellerup neighbourhood and globally. A number of local organisations and individuals have provided input to the project in the form of dialogues and interviews.
After an initial creation of a two-dimensional printed map, Mapping Gellerup was transformed into a spatial interactive installation, which was presented in Gellerup during 2022, at the new Sports and Culture Campus ‘Mellemrummet’ and in BLIXENS at the Environment and Technology Department (Aarhus Municipality).
The installation Mapping Gellerup can be experienced as a physical space that highlights the social and political changes and daily life in Gellerup.
By physically/literally entering Carl’s installation, you have the opportunity to see, read and experience ‘the immediate lost that we especially encounter in a place like Gellerup, where everything changes so quickly’ (Carl, 2022). In line with Sigrids Stue’s work in the area, this collaborative process focuses on memories and the collection of narratives, relationships and identities that risk being erased and replaced in the repetitive urban development and through the various master plans.
‘I hope that with this timeline, I can help address the question of who development is for and what is sometimes lost in the process,’ says Carl Fraser.
The project is realised in collaboration with Sigrids Stue and other local partners: Brabrand-Årslev Local History Collection, Gellerup Library, Gellerup Art Factory and a large number of welcoming local residents. Mapping Gellerup was financially supported through Sigrids Stue’s funds from the Danish Arts Foundation, the Jutland Art Foundation and Aarhus Municipality.
Mapping Gellerup is the starting point for Carl Fraser’s text production Claiming Space, which is published as part of Neighbourhood Remarks’ publication series.
